Following retirement in the late 1960's, John L. Grove embarked on on a cross country RV voyage. After spending numerous years establishing his family built crane company with his brother, John had no idea that this journey would bring about the rise of JLG Industries, Inc. The world leader of mobile aerial work platforms and precision materials handling equipment was the end result of a road expedition.
Whilst on their trip, John spent time conversing with past business acquaintances whom the Groves stopped to see along the way. These conversations combined with a tragic event—two workers being electrocuted on scaffolding when the Groves were going to the Hoover Dam— John uncovered a considerable market for a product that could quickly and safely lift people in the air to accomplish maintenance and other construction functions.
Following their return from vacation, John set up a partnership with two of his friends and purchased a metal fabrication business in McConnellsburg, Pennsylvania. Opening with a small crew of twenty employees, they fashioned and sold their first JLG aerial work platform in 1970. The business incorporates many of the simple design elements of that original lift into current designs.
JLG lift trucks have come a long way from the time when Mr. John L. Grove returned to town from his cross-country road trip and since the initial aerial work platform debuted on the market. These days, the business proudly continues to expand itself into a range of marketplaces globally and develops new products to ensure clients are capable of being more efficient and perform in the workplace within a safer atmosphere.
